I Am

scripture

Here are some of the things Jesus says about Himself.

The Bread of Life

Then Jesus declared, “I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:35 New International Version

What did Jesus mean by this? God creates every human being with a hunger for a relationship with Him. Physical bread gives physical life – Jesus refers to Himself as spiritual bread that gives spiritual life through a relationship with God.

The Light of the World

When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12 New International Version

What did Jesus mean by this? Light gives direction. It helps us not to be afraid, just like turning a lamp on in a dark room dispels fear of the darkness. Jesus directs us to follow Him – His light comforts us, helps us not to be afraid and illuminates the way forward,

The Gate for the sheep

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the Gate for the sheep … whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.”

John 10: 7,9 New International Version

What did Jesus mean by this? In the mornings, shepherds would let their sheep out, by the gate, of the enclosed fenced area where they were safe from wolves and other predators, into the green fields where they could graze. The shepherds would remain by the gate to watch over their sheep. The sheep could return to the safe area, via the gate, whenever they wanted to. In this way, Jesus is like the gate. All who come to Him and believe in Him are one of His own.

The Good Shepherd

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep … I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.

John 10: 11,14 New International Version

What did Jesus mean by this? The sheep recognised and responded to the voice of their shepherd. Similarly, when we recognise and respond to Jesus and believe in Him, we belong to Him and He knows every one of us by name. We each have a personal relationship with Jesus, our shepherd. Not only do we have a relationship with Jesus, it’s a forever relationship. One we can never lose. He will never turn His back on His sheep. We belong to Him, and He belongs to us.

I am the Resurrection and the Life

Jesus said to her, “I am the Resurrection and the Life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11: 25-26 New International Version

What did Jesus mean by this? Jesus promised that those who believe and trust in Him will have abundant life – eternal life and will receive a new body and spend eternity in heaven with Him.

The Way, the Truth and the Life

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6 New International Version

What did Jesus mean by this? Jesus said that anyone who has seen Him has seen the Father (John 14:9), and anyone who has a relationship with Jesus also has a relationship with God. He came to reveal a just and loving God, and to die on the cross as a once-and-for-all sacrifice to conquer sin and death, offering us the opportunity to accept eternal life.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:5 New International Version

What did Jesus mean by this? When branches are removed from the vine, they will wither and die. He is saying that, without Him, we will die spiritually. Without Him, we cannot understand God’s Word as He did, we cannot trust God as He did, love others as He did, nor live our lives to please God as He did. We must abide in Him by reading God’s Word, praying and trusting Him, and depending on God’s Holy Spirit to teach us to be more like Jesus. When we accept Jesus as our Saviour, the Holy Spirit will dwell within us and help us to bear fruit for God.

prayer

Our Father, Thank you that Jesus is everything to us. He conquered sin and death on our behalf and brings us to a personal relationship with you. May we always abide in Him for our spiritual food and light, that we may bear much fruit for your kingdom. Thank you for loving us so much that you provided a way for us to love and know you.

In Jesus Name, Amen.
